Key Firearm Safety Rules

Prior to starting any Gunsmithing Product ensure that the Magazine has been removed.   Ensure that the chamber is empty by visually inspecting it and follow the 4 Key Firearm Safety Rules

  • Treat all guns as if they are loaded: Always assume a firearm is loaded, even if you believe otherwise. When handling, immediately check the action and chamber to confirm it is empty.
  • Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction: Always control the direction of the muzzle. A safe direction means the gun is pointed so that even if it discharges, it will not cause injury or damage.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger: Keep your trigger finger outside the trigger guard and straight along the frame until you are on target and ready to shoot.
  • Know your target and what is beyond: Never fire at a target without being absolutely sure of what it is and what lies behind it. Bullets can pass through targets or ricochet, making a proper backstop essential.

Army 1911 Technical Manuals

Army Technical Manuals TM 9-1005-211-12 and TM 9-1005-211-34 serve as comprehensive and authoritative publications covering the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the U.S. Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1. Originally developed to ensure consistency and standardization across Army units, these manuals not only guided soldiers in the field but also established clear technical benchmarks for armorers and support personnel. As a result, the M1911A1 could be maintained to uniform military standards regardless of location or operational conditions.

TM 9-1005-211-12

To begin with, TM 9-1005-211-12, the Operator and Organizational Maintenance Manual, concentrates on proper handling and routine service procedures. Specifically, it outlines safe operation, field stripping, inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and basic troubleshooting. In addition, it provides step-by-step instructions for preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS), thereby helping unit-level personnel identify wear, damage, or malfunction before issues escalate. Furthermore, the manual emphasizes safety precautions, approved ammunition, and functional testing procedures, ensuring dependable performance both in training and in combat environments.

TM 9-1005-211-34

By contrast, TM 9-1005-211-34, the Direct and General Support Maintenance Manual, moves well beyond basic service tasks and into detailed technical repair and overhaul. In this section, armorers and support-level technicians are given precise specifications, tolerances, gauging methods, and inspection criteria. Moreover, the manual includes exploded diagrams, component identification charts, refinishing guidance, and replacement standards. Consequently, it serves as a complete reference for rebuilds, major repairs, and long-term sustainment of the pistol at higher maintenance levels.

Taken together, these manuals establish a structured, tiered maintenance system that supports the M1911A1 throughout its service life. Not only do they reflect the Army’s disciplined approach to small-arms maintenance, but they also provide modern gunsmiths, historians, collectors, and serious 1911 enthusiasts with invaluable technical insight. Ultimately, they remain essential references for understanding military specifications, inspection doctrine, and the mechanical standards that defined the service performance of the M1911A1.
